Hyphen-Con 2014::Pimp Your Game! [Now With Voting!]

Post by SpaceMonkey »

All right - vote time!

You have 3 votes. You can't change them. Submit accordingly, by the 20th. Go Hyph!

Ok, anyone and everyone feel free to pimp your games here! Please remember the following:

* a max of 2 submissions per person (one is ok as well if you know you have a winner).
* any game, any game system - we're pretty open around here
* bring your best pitch, because it won't get on the schedule without some votes!
* also, please note whether you would be down to run 2 games if both of your pitches are voted in, or if you would prefer only one. Doesn't always come up, but helps us organize it if it does.

We want time for the GMs to be able to prep, so we need votes done by the weekend of the 18th of October. Pimp until the 12th of October, then we'll vote from the 13th to the 18th and GMs will have about 3 weeks to prep for those lucky enough to have gotten the votes.

Ok, go!

First Pitch!

:machinegu Heineken-Disney is acquiring new markets for its line of gyrojet munitions. Chicagoland is the prize: a fat contract with Chicago Defense Force is what the Board wants and by Mickey, it's what Drezzen Mulvamey aims to deliver. After all, the young hot-shot neo-human executive with his star on the rise can't afford to fail now. But when Drekker Arms buys a militia, they stay bought. Unless The Black Rose Syndicate happens to be expanding its gambling operations at the time. With all these players on the scene, a veteran team of runners with scads of street cred can pick and choose their jobs. Your team is such a team. Watcha gonna do, Chummer?

Interface Zero 2.0 is a cyberpunk setting for Savage Worlds. Play a chrome badass on the streets of 2099 doing jobs with your team to get by, get high, or climb the ladder from the gutter to the stars. It's Fast, Furious Fun with razor girls, hybrids, and corporate drek-heads hacking the matrix and blowing shit up just to watch it burn!

First Pi... Fuck.

Anyway. Here's mine. Both of these would be Dread games.

Inheritance
You were among Professor Armitage's favorite students. Now that he's been missing for seven years, his death in absentia has brought you a sizable fortune. In his will was a single request. Remove the contents of a safe deposit box from Arkham First National and destroy them. Do that, and the money is yours. Simple.

Home Makeover
When Abagail Marsh-Owens inherited a house in the quaint seaside village of Innsmouth, her dreams of a summer home were finally realized. Rather than foot the bill of the enormous restoration costs, her husband Oliver pulled some strings down at the station and got their new home on the hit Education Channel show Home Makeover. The cast and crew of the show have arrived in the sleepy fishing village and will spend the weekend getting the old cliff side home back to it's original Splendor.

I'd prefer to run one game.

My other pitch:

:2guns: I'll be digging into the version 0.3 document of The Sprawl to prepare to run The Kurosawa Extraction...if enough of you rivetheads vote for it!!!

http://www.ardens.org/games/the-sprawl/

Save a click! Read this! Also click on the awesome link above!

The Sprawl
“The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel.”
Neuromancer, William Gibson.
The future. Dark. Dirty. Dangerous. Over it all, the megacorps. “Zaibatsus”, some call them. Vast multinational corporations that control the flow of money, information, goods, and people. Governments hover on their doorsteps begging for scraps. Hydrophilic lubricious polymers and automated cleaners keep their arcologies shining amidst the grey-brown urban sprawl which surrounds them. The blood of the city keeps the money flowing.

Technology keeps changing, shifting, mutating; adapt or die. There’s a sticky film of information smeared over everything, a networked datasphere in service to the megacorps. Buy this. Obey that. Buy some more.
You’re loners, punks and criminals, marginalised by society through birth, choice or violence. Parasites, living symbiotic existences in the shadows cast by the arcologies, feeding from the scraps the corps dangle and scampering to the shadows to avoid their dismissive, destructive, shooings. See, the corps aren’t satisfied with having it all. They want more, and the only way they can get it is by eating their own. For the megacorporations, espionage, theft, kidnapping, and murder are just tools in the briefcase of success. For you, those are rungs on the slippery ladder to success. Play your cards right and you’ll be set: reputation, money, credibility. Whatever you want. Freedom. But one false step and they’ll take away everything. You’ll be replaced by the next mouthy punk with too much raw talent and bloody ambition and not enough smarts. Tread carefully.
The corps don’t need you. They need people like you. And there’s plenty more punks like you out there in The Sprawl.
The Sprawl is a game of mission-based action in a gritty neon-and-chrome cyberpunk future. You are the extended assets of vast multinational corporations, operating in the criminal underground, and performing the tasks that those multinationals can’t do, or can’t be seen to, do. Deniable, professional, and ultimately disposable.

...also, Id' like to run 1 of these two games, not necessarily both. I'm prepared to run either for four(4) players.

Oh yeah. Only six days left to pitch. If there aren't enough GMs, I would totally run both games.

The Four Doctors...

Discovering that the entire universe has inexplicably been destroyed somewhere between December 24th 1944 and January 1st 1945, a few incarnations of a certain eponymous time lord all arrive suddenly and unexpectedly in the German town of Dresden on the eve of a Christmas celebration, along with their companions Susan Foreman, Dorthy "Ace" McShane, Bill Preston, Theodore Logan, and Hieronymus von Münchhausen.

An adventure in Time and Space for up to nine players. EDIT this would of course use the Doctor Who Adventures in Time and Space rule set, and the four incarnations of the Doctor.
OR

Shipwrecked on Skull Island

The unexpected death of the presumably immortal God Emperor sent shock waves through the Empire of the Known World. Succession was a muddled mess for the God Emperor had twelve consorts, each a member of one of the ten great houses, thirteen legitimate children, and no legitimate heir.

The Instrumentality had stepped in to restore order and decided to round up all undesirables. They loaded the dissidents, outlaws, rebels, the poor, the sick, and more than a few monsters onto prison ships to get rid of them.

This is how you came to be aboard a prison ship bound for the Edge of the World. Crammed into the hold with hundreds of other prisoners, chained together in ankle deep water and excrement.

Last night there was a storm, and the ship was dashed against the rocks. The crew unlocked the chains and there was a mad dash to flee the ship. Many were lost to the sea. You survived.

A BECMI like hexcrawl over a dreaded island of adventure and pirates for up to six players. One assassin, one cultist, one mariner, one muscle, one thief, and one vampire spawn will be provided as pregens. Feel free to roll up your own character. https://skullisland.obsidianportal.com/wikis/main-page

Tales of the Jade Remora: Panda Khan vs. Space Usagi

When the space pirate crew of the Jade Remora raid a Shirohoshi Zabatisu Space Station, they manage to kidnap the Zabatisu's lead scientist for ransom. Forcing the Shirohoshi clan to dispatch a negotiator to recover the scientist.

Take the role of Li Yang the former Panda Khan, Hsin the Shapeshifting Fox, Jade the Tong Captain of the Jade Remora, her first mate Zhong, and Space Usagi as they meet under mysterious circumstances.

A game of Usagi Yojimbo roleplaying game/using the interlock system for up to six players.

Slave Pits of the Undercity, D&D 5E
"It is time to put a stop to the marauders! For years the coastal towns have been burned and looted by the forces of evil. You and your fellow adventurers have vowed to root out and destroy the source of these raids. But beware, hundreds of good men and women have been taken by the slavers, never to be heard from again!"

Good ol' A1 -- commonly known in OSR circles as "the steak sauce module," probably -- converted to D&D 5E. Appropriate-level pregens will be provided.

EDIT: Or maybe Forgotten Temple of Tharizdun? I dunno. I'm good either way.

EDIT: Someone posted a pretty thorough conversion of the Desert of Desolation series online. So maybe that? Shit, I'm terrible at this.

You Can Go Home Again, The Sparks Nevada Thrilling Adventure Game
Kids! Shine your astro-spurs and don your robot fists! It's time for Sparks Nevada, Marshal on Mars!

Since making its playtest debut at Hyphen-Con 2013, the Sparks Nevada Thrilling Adventure Game has undergone some pretty significant changes. Fresh from its triumphant most-recent playtest at Big Bad Con, we'll play through two episodes, which is how this thing is structured now.

WAIT -- I put too much time into a D&D hack of GDW Traveller a few months ago, but only got to run it once. I propose that I run it again, this time at Hyphen-Con.

Delvin' with Devlin, D&D: Traveller Edition
A D&D-specific (not fantasy -- D&D) hack of old-timey Traveller, complete with lifepath chargen and Traveller's quirky, deadly, and fun combat system. It's fun! You'll like it!

First time doing pitches for Hyphen-Con. Not-Experienced GM. Nothing can go wrong, right?

Welcome to IOU (4-5 players, GURPS-Lite, First Choice Priority)
You are all welcome to Student Orientation at Illuminati University. You will be introduced to the campus, our administration ( Once they finish closing the wormhole to The Other Side of the Door), the Commons (Food is served fresh and hot, please provide your own utensils for taming it), and the dorms. But first, you have to register for class at the Registar. Now remember that class slots are limited, and I am sure you all know how to get there... Just try not to kill too many students on your way there.

Avatar of Power (4-5 players, OVA, Second Choice Priority)
Your village has for centuries, sent one blessed child on a pilgrimage to The Summit, to be imbued with the power of the Avatar, sending the best protectors of the land with them. However, when you all have been born with the potential, they decided to let Fate sort it out and send you all without protection, wanting to see who will survive the journey.

Defection
General Dorosa has decided to defect from the Gorian Federation. Dorosa's only way to get out there is with the help of her brother, a scoundrel who is always looking for a fast dollar. Space opera action using Fate Core. Will include some world building.

Starfall
Corporate weapon smiths to the galaxy, their creations have no equal in known space. The new calculus of is simple: the side that Starfall arms, wins. Will use Kingdom, a game about communities.

Star Trek with Atomic Robo The RPG

Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Endeavour. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no one has gone before. Play classic Star Trek using the new Fate Atomic Robo The Roleplaying Game rules. Bold Action and Logical Science In Space!

The Day After Ragnarok Fate Edition

Welcome to the end of the world. The skies are shrouded with burning, oily smoke, the Earth groans under the poisoned corpse of the World Serpent brought low by atomic fire. The year is 1948 and it has been three years since the Nazis summoned Jörmungandr and both Raganrok and WW2 ended with the serpentfall. Play the new Fate version of this dieselpunk, Submachine gun and Sorcery world. See it smolder, see it burn, see if you can save it.

Here are a couple of things!

A Quiet Year: A post-apocalyptic map-making game, in which we play, collectively, the people of a small village after the fall of man. The game encompasses a year of time, and it has some fascinating mechanics. At the end, we get to decide if everybody LIVES or DIES.

Home for the Holidays: It's been a couple of years since the whole gang got together. Things change. Life gets in the way. And you have fewer and fewer excuses to get back to the town you all grew up in. But, just by chance, you're all back here for the holidays this year. And as you close out Christmas Eve night at the downtown bar -- the owner desperate to get home to his kids -- you hear the ringing of sleigh bells. The door flies open, and a fat man bearing a crooked wooden staff peers out at you from beneath his hood. Yes, kids, Santa exists, and the shit is about to hit the fan. System: Dread. Jenga towers for all!

Happy to run both; would prefer to just run one.

Hey, I just wanted to let you all know that I might not be able to make the Hyph this year. I've had a family emergency come up and I might be out of state when HyphenCon happens. Since I'm supposed to be running a game you might want to pick an alternate game for my slot just in case.

Sorry,
Morgan.

Dude, that's terrible and we understand. :frown: Real life always trumps hobbies.

Does this mean I can volunteer to run Doctor Who, since I voted for Star Trek/Atomic Robo but not for my own game? Didn't want to be biased, and anyway voting for your own game is akin to liking your own posts on Facebook, its a little presumptuous and presents a vibe of shameless self promotion. I didn't want to steal Devlin1's thunder.

Ok, so we are going to the next tier of votes:

[Savage Slacker] Chicagoland (Interface Zero 2.0)
[mrlost] The Four Doctors (Dr Who AiTaS)
[Galahad] Avatar of Power (OVA)
[cczernia] Defection (Fate Core)

As far as I can tell from above, all of these GMs are ok with running these games (either it is their only one in the mix after voting, or they have another and have stated they are ok running 2 games if they get the votes. or haven't stated the opposite. or whatever).

This will be an informal kinda thing - first game to get 3 upvotes will snag the slot - just post your opinion in a reply to this thread.

I only want to run one game. Mr Lost seems determined to run Dr Who so I'll vote for that.

You didn't put your preference in your game submissions, so no dice. I vote for Defection.

Ugh, you guys! I want to play OVA, but realistically speaking I won't be able to play two games anyway if I'm running one too.

Fine. I'll vote for IZ2.0, the game I want to play/run. I should have voted for it in the first place. Then we wouldn't be having this discussion!

If it isn't too late (I don't see a three-point victory), I'll throw my hat for OVA.

Oh... Mr. Devlin1's comment made me read through the thread a bit more carefully - I'm not sure there isn't some sort of in-joke or slang I'm not getting maybe? Is the Defection game a diceless fudge system as the SpaceMonkey says? I just moved to San Diego and your convention sounds really fun! Sorry if I stepped on any toes? I'm fine to play these games listed - they all look very wonderful!

Please, Mr. Devlin1 was my father. Call me Devlin1.

And I was just kidding there, as was Slacker -- we had a three-way tie at two votes each, and now we have a four-way tie at two votes each. Which isn't helping to decide which of these four games to include in the schedule. Pay my joke no mind and vote how you will.

And welcome to both San Diego and RPG-SanDiego.org! How did you find us? This kind of thing -- someone new finding the site here and Hyphen-Con, presumably via Googling for a local convention -- has only happened once before. Are you in the Navy, by any chance? Because the last guy was in the Navy.

Geez. Four way tie, huh? That sucks. I guess we'll all just have to prepare our games then.
