I just purchased Vampire: The Requiem from Gametown. I get it home, and I start reading. Things are missing. Skills. Backgrounds. What's going on? I come to find out that it requires yet another $35 book, World of Darkness. It says NOTHING about needing a 2nd book on the back cover, or (as far as I can tell) anywhere inside. The original Vampire game had freaking everything in it - you could play (and I have) with just the single book. What a rip! Maybe it's my fault for not researching it better - who knows. I'm just pissed. It looks like I'm heading back to Gametown to return it and pick up some D&D books instead. Gawd Damn it.

Take a quick look at the back cover. It says "For use with the World of Darkness Rulebook." If you did any research on it you would have seen that it required the WoD book. I'm surprised you didn't see it sitting next to V:tR. Everywhere I looked the two were grouped together.
Oh, and right now the WoD book is on sale by publisher and will go up $10 in the future. So, unless you plan on picking them up used (or never plan on picking them up) than now would be a good time.
Also, the WoD book just covers the basic rules and how to make a human. So, you can use all the V;tR stuff as is. Not to mention it would make a great source for V:tM. Keep your eyes open for reviews, I do beleive a few will be on rpg.net tomorrow.

The WoD corebook is an awesome book. Not so hot on V:tR so far, but I still like it. Read the cover, n00b.

Ok, I finally found where it says that. I'm still pissed, tho. Like I said before, with the old game you could play with just a single book. If I want to play something that requires multiple books, I'll play D&D.

Well, the nice thing about the new WoD is that the new splatbooks (i.e, vampire) are pure setting and special rules for the supernaturals they cover. No need to rewrite three chapters of the book. Or wasted pages.
Besides, the WoD corebook is like, 20 bucks, and its a great book in it's own right. I may use if for a modern day X-Filesish game completely ouside of the WoD setting... *shrug*

Well, WW has basically modeled the nWoD off the Dark Ages line with one core book for multiple game. Apparently, a lot of people complained that they didn't want to buy Dark Ages Vampire, to play Dark Ages Mage, Werewolf or Fae. So, instead they made a single core book for all the games. Dream Pod 9 used the exact same model with their games.
If you are interested in the new vampire than you should check out both books. If you're just interested in the new rules than take V:tR back and get the WoD book. If you want to complain about marketing than let me introduce you to my dear friend 3.5.

If you go to Do or Dice on El Cajon Blvd (assuming they still have copies left), you'll get 15% off the $20 cover price. That gets it for like $17. You can also order it from Amazon, which is currently listing it for $14.
I can understand your ire, but it really is a good book. You can run mortal-only games with just that one, and get a very X-File-ish type feeling. Pretty neato.

I think the second review is the one I agree with the most. These bits really sum it up for me:
The only people who should not buy this book are people who actually want a game that encourages Story and Character over Stats and Skills. For all its high claims, the World of Darkness fails to deliver on this point. What you’re getting here is a generic task resolution system, much like GURPS. That’s not a bad thing for an RPG core rulebook to be, but don’t expect it to be anything more.
and
The beauty of the core mechanic is that it’s simple. It promotes combat that is fast, bloody and brutal. The extra options will serve only to bog things down.
