When a cat is dropped, it always lands on its feet, and when toast is dropped, it always lands with the buttered side facing down. I propose to strap buttered toast to the back of a cat. The two will hover, spinning inches above the ground. With a giant buttered cat array, a high-speed monorail could easily link New York with Chicago.

I have an idea for how to get the group together, which might help with concepts.
You've all had dreams lately of a great evil being released upon the world. These dreams resulted in a mark apparing on your skin somewhere, and a pull north. Following your dreams, you all arrive at a lone monistary far to the north. Ther, the monks and clerics appear to not be surprised by your arrival, knowing about the marks and dreams. They say they have been awaiting you're arrival, for you are destended to stop the defeat evil benith the earth.

Given the background that Chris has outlined I think I might mix a few levels of rogue into my fighter to add some spelunking skills.

I’m definitely thinking of playing a cleric. I’m just having a hard time deciding on a race/concept. My original idea was for a dwarven cleric of Haela Brightaxe dwarven god of the joy of battle. Then I started to think that avoiding the whole dark vision thing would be fun. Now I’m thinking a Halfling cleric. The only problem with that is that I would probably put 1st level into rogue. That means that we wouldn’t have much in the way of healing until 2nd. Also from BP’s warning post it looks like we might need someone to make weapons and armor and stuff for us. Well, what do you think.

I’m currently playing a rogue with a 2 levels in fighter. Very cool. Improved feint is a very good thing. That plus two weapon fighting makes him a total front line fighter.

That sounds like a good idea. I'm getting the strong hint that self sufficiency will be important. Also since we will be 100% in the dungeon some rogue skills will be very helpful.
So I’m drawn between a stealthy ranged attacking strongheart halfling cleric with first level in rogue. And a full on melee dwarven cleric.
Dwarven paladin!
And then someone tell me about it later!

You could make a really nice archer with just a couple of levels in fighter, two bonus feats in two levels gets you nearly all the feats you’ll need. Or an elven cleric with the elf domain. The domain gives you point blank shot plus elves are proficient in all bows. Hell, you could put level one in cleric, then 2 and 3 in fighter and then go cleric the rest of the way or until a PrC interested. That would be nice. You’d avoid the ranger, and get the flavor you’d be missing with a straight fighter.
Boy, I’m sorry to sound like such a power-dink but I’ve been really trying to figure out how to pull off a Halfling cleric and my mind is just on this kind of track.

Don't worry. I'm always concocting strange class combinations to achieve a specific character concept I have.

Ok I need to get a second opinion on this character concept idea I have. I'm attempting to create a light, tactical fighter. For my incarnation, this means weilding a bastard sword two-handed wearing light armor like a chain shirt. This is a little different that the usual builds: no dual wielding, no rapiers or other finessable weapons. I'm tying to work in more skills like tumble but rogue levels would reduce my BAB and I'm not interested in sneak attack damage. Any ideas?

Have you looked at the Swashbuckler from the Complete Worrier? It has some nice light combat features like a charge that lets you turn corners and jump over stuff and I think tumble is a class skill. I think it might have a full BAB too. The only thing is that it’s kind of built around Weapon Fineness. But it dose have something that lets you include your Intelligence Bonus to you damage. What makes you interested in the Bastard Sward/Light Fighter idea?

The concept was inspired both by fictional sources and a dose of common sense.
One of the inspirations is Master Yupa from the graphic novel Nausicaä of the Valley of Wind. He is an explorer and master swordsman. A sort of ranger/fighter in D&D terms but without the magic or animal companion.
As for the common sense side, if one were to travel extensively, then medium and heavy armor have a number of drawbacks. Such armors are very overt, hard to maintain, and need to be removed to sleep. Not very helpful for someone who is on the move. As for weapons, I'm a fan of the sword schools of medieval Europe and most light weapons would be ineffective fighting armored or monstrous opponents.
Mechanics wise, this kind of fighter concept has worked very well in simulations using the Temple of Elemental Evil as opposed to the normal big shiny tin can fighter approach. To munchkin number-crunchers, this character concept is not optimial, but it is fun and it does work.

If you’re looking for a more historical style you might want to consider a spear. I’ve seen feats that let you use a normal spear with reach or as a two handed weapon when you hit with the other end. Plus setting for charge and one hand-two hand options. It’s really versatile and I think you could do some cool things with that. Plus it fits the wondering warrior thing really well.
Ok, so what we have so far:
Chris - DM
Gotetsu - Dwarf Barbarian - Weaponsmith
Foxbat - Human Fighter
Richard - Dwarf Rogue
Infernus - Undecided (I think a Paladin would be cool)
Cthulhu - Wizard (maybe Sorceror, but Wizard would probably be better)
Jake - Cleric (Race unsure)
Did I get anything wrong or leave anyone out?

I've been thinking over your advice and it may prove to be a good solution. I'm thinking of the fight from Hero between the Nameless One and Sky. Sky was quite fierce fencer with his spear. I'll see what I can cook up. Thanks.

I think I've landed upon the best solution using the core rules for my fighter. By initially taking two levels of monk you get good skills, good saves across the board, improved unarmed strike (1d6), improved grapple, evasion, and combat reflexes. The downside is, slightly less hitdice and BAB.
The only problem I forsee is that I won't be primetime until level 3. Do you guys think two light tanks, Gotetsu and myself, are enough during this initial period?

First off, level progression is supposed to be pretty slow in this one, so... :?
Secondly, we still haven't heard from Infernus what he is playing (I'm still pulling for a Paladin). He may add extra firepower to make up for your early combat lacking. :P

I'd recommend against it. Unless you plan on fighting unarmed the whole time Improved Unarmed Strike and Improved Grapple aren’t going to be all that useful. You can get more bang for your buck with rouge, barbarian, or swashbuckler.

No group shot this time. You're on your own for your character illustrations. Unless the fancy strikes me. The Gnome is a possibility....
Are spurs considered weapons? Cuz I could make them...er...wait. You're riding the other dwarf, right?
