The year is 2111. Life as we know it is gone from the oceans of earth and people walk on crushed, flaky fish-bones at the shores wearing their gas masks, looking out at sunsets made brilliant by the dangerous particulate matter that hangs in a thick curtain over the whole earth. Human life is persistent, in the first world relegated to biospheres controlled by nanny-states. The less fortunate adapt as they can, reduced to a sliver of their former population, with life spans comparable to the dark ages. The ice caps have melted, the shorelines have changed, agriculture has been sustained by heavy genetic engineering.

In this bleak world, humanity yet persists and reaches toward the stars in hope. Two generations have been born in the distant reaches of space. Their bones are more brittle than ours, they are taller and more elegant. They will never be able to live in our gravity, their descendants will never return to the Earth their forefathers abandoned. Subject to materials and energy in space the extent of which they are only beginning to discover and catalog, these people are changing. Lately, these changes have proven fatal in the new generation. Even in the stars, we may find no hope for the future.

Not just their bodies are changing. Their very essence is changing. They are about to make contact.

It began with a dream.

Winter also says that he's in. We have plans for next Friday already. My Thursdays from now on are boned. Are people more likely to have availability mid-week or Fri/Sat/Sun? I'm sort of thinking about next Sunday afternoon, the 25th, but am not wildly attached to it.
