Hyphen-Con 'Ocho' -- Pimp Your Game

Also known as 'The Hyph' or the more wordy 'rpg-sandiego all-day meet-up'. This is the place to discuss everything related to our yearly November mini-con.

Hyphen-Con 'Ocho' -- Pimp Your Game

Post by SpaceMonkey »

Ok, anyone and everyone feel free to pimp your games here! Please remember the following:

* a max of 2 submissions per person (one is ok as well if you know you have a winner).
* any game, any game system - we're pretty open around here
* bring your best pitch, because it won't get on the schedule without some votes!
* also, please note whether you would be down to run 2 games if both of your pitches are voted in, or if you would prefer only one. Doesn't always come up, but helps us organize it if it does.

We want time for the GMs to be able to prep, so we need votes done by the weekend of the 10th of march. That gives us about 3 weeks from now, so pimp until the 5th of March, then we'll vote that week and GMs will have 3 weeks to prep.

Ok, go!

Pitch 1 - 'Cinders in the Void' - You are LAZERS, freelance law enforcement solving problems in the harsh area of space known as 'The Bleed'. Your missions are always thorny, because that's the only time they call on you... but this time there's possibly something different going on. If only you could remember what... or if.
This is an Ashen Stars game using the Gumshoe system. Largely investigative (but Gumshoe investigative, which is an important distinction in that there is less fumbling around and more getting shit done), likely with starship battles and other action (depending on the Players).

Image

Pitch 2 - 'Trouble in Duckburg' - ... but then again, when isn't there trouble in Duckburg? This time it's gonna take all Scrooge and the gang can muster to carry the day.. and then some! They must partner with the Beagle Boys to defeat an even bigger threat! What's got them so worried? How long can the Beagles be trusted? Tune in to this game (via voting) to find out!
This is a homebrew Ducktales game using the PDQ system (see Zorcer of Zo, Swashbucklers of the 7 Skies, etc). Largely adventure and social interaction, with quick cartoon violence. Likely characters will include Scrooge & Huey/Dewey/Louie, Launchpad, Gyro Gearloose, and Bigtime Beagle. Huey/Dewey/Louie together will likely be one playable character, because I think I can really make that work in PDQ.

* GM Preference - I prefer to only run one game if both of mine get voted in. Too many good games at They Hyph for me to not get to play any!

More Lady Blackbird hacks for me this year I'm afraid.

Blackbird High School - Japanese Anime High School Girls! Strange goings on at Blackbird High are not such an uncommon experience. Demons, otherworldly portals, alien invasions... But who's got time for that when you have to study for the Biology test?

Pacific Blackbird Railway - quick sell: Hobo Wizard of Oz. Yes, you heard me, HOBOS!!

Lady Silver Age Avengers Bird - Classic Avengers from the mid to late 60s: Captain America, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, Hawkeye, Giant-Man/Ant-Man and Wasp. Complete with all the hokey silver age tropes you all know and love!

My LB hacks tend to run only around 2 to 2 1/2 hours. My druthers would be to run only one game.

Image Welcome to Hero City, home to some of the world's most popular superheroes. Heroes like Captain Crusaider! Masked Revenger! Dynamo-Man! And the rest of the Defenders of Justice!

Then, there's you guys. You don't even rate as C-list heroes. You're powers, if you have any, are a joke. You never get any press coverage. And if Captain Crusader asks one more time for you to get him a cup of coffee, you're going to snap. But you have a plan. A brilliantly stupid plan, that will rocket you to the top of the popularity charts. If only the rest of these fuck-ups don't ruin it first.

Hero City is a playset I created for Fiasco. This would be a playtest of the set, as I haven't actually had the opportunity to use it yet.

Image Welcome to the elite Danger Patrol - a special super-powered crime fighters who protect Rocket City from evil Stygian Adepts, the nefarious agents of the Crimson republic, rampaging monsters set loose by mad scientists, and other crazy threats. Do you have what it takes?

Yes, it's my yearly Danger Patrol game. :)

I, too, would prefer to only run one game.

I was bummed that I ended up having to miss this yesterday, so sign me up.

I think this will be the first Hyphen-Con since the early days that I don't run a game. Or... maybe I'm wrong about that. Time will tell.

MonsterHearts - (ApocalypseWorld system) Most teenagers get to grow up without encountering anything scarier than gang violence, drug overdoses and chlamydia. They think that’s the worst that the world has to offer them, and they have the luxury of laughing.

You don’t have the luxury of laughing. You know the world has hideous, horrible things hiding in the shadows. You’re one of them. There’s wickedness that dwells within your chest, darkness that courses through your veins.

Most teenagers will never know that things like you exist, the secret monsterhearts.

Image

Lost Colony - (Fate) You are a Keeper, a member of a sleeper ship that will take hundreds of years to travel across the galaxy to create the first colony outside the Earthen Solar System. You're job is to wake every decade and make sure everything is on course and take care of any problems. When you wake up this time there are a lot of problems.

In A Wicked Age-4 Oracles:

-Dr. Who Oracle

or

-Wuxia Oracle

or

-Shadowrun Oracle

or

-Pirate Oracle

And let us not forget:

Or
-In A Wicked Diner: Tom Waits Oracle

(e.g.
-He builds a strange machine out of bones, unaware of his neighbor's snooping.
-A traditional song is being played, the hounds are roaring, and everyone is going to hell.
-A black rider, gleefully promising doom.
-An abandoned house, once full of life and joy, now crumbling and decrepit.)

vote for the one you want and I'm happy to run it. But remember, there can be only one!(because I want to play in 2 sessions on Saturday and run 1)

I'm only willing to run one game, and only in the afternoon (hopefully).

AFMBE: Senior Citizen Slaughter 2: You thought you escaped? You thought it was over? You may have made it out of Shady Palms nursing home, but the horror has just begun. You'll never escape the embrace of the Coushatta Resort Casino at least not without rescuing Andy Griffith from the eight annual Louisiana Matlock Convention!

A sequel to the first Senior Citizen Slaughter. Six pregens provided.

Servitor: In the grim nightmare of the far future, where there is only war and the galaxy's a mess, you are a member of the ship family that has served the Selusa dynasty for generations. You are also a three eyed mutant that does odd jobs for a death cult, your peers are a cross dressing bishi arch-militant, and a shy tech priest. Your master is the warrant-bearer Lord-Captain Sarthiqq Selusa, a pompous 14 year old kid in a huge powdered wig and his collection of model trains.

However sometime between serving tea and torching the twist-gaunts, the master was abducted by heretics and you've got to get him back.

A Warhammer 40k Rogue Trader adventure using the Maid RPG, with five pregens provided.

So I've got a couple of ideas for Hyphen-con games, but I think I've narrowed it down these two:

King of the Street Fighters
The City is overrun by crime, the gangs control the streets, ninja violence is on the rise, and terrorism is rampant. The police are helpless, and only a small group of vigilante martial artists, professional street fighters, and lone ninja warriors still fight for justice, glory, and honor.

Now Mr. Big is holding a martial arts tournament, which has drawn in fighters from all over the world; at the same time he is holding the city hostage. You all have reasons to fight, but are you a bad enough dude to unleash your fatal fury in a final fight on the streets of rage in a contest of mortal kombat to prove you have mastered the art of fighting and crown your self the King of the Street Fighters?

A game inspired by classic arcade fighting games and beat ’em ups, using a modified version of the FATE system.

Rescue the Lady
Lady Barbara Melville - the sister of one of the King’s closest advisers - is lost, missing and presumed captured by brigands from the Barbary Coast. News has reached Lisbon that if that was not reason enough to dispatch forces to recover her, she is to be auctioned off to the highest bidder and one of those bidders is an agent of Napoleon himself. This outrage cannot stand and therefore a crack company of infantry are being sent on the speediest frigate available to enforce the will of the King on the heathen. The Barbary Pirates are a very different foe to the French and for the honour of the Duke of Wellington and the crown, the Lady must be rescued.

The Napoleonic Wars rage across Europe, only Great Britain and her allies stand against the evil Tyrant Napoleon Bonaparte and his sinister plans of world conquest. It’s time to fix bayonets, clear for action, beat to quarters, and cry “Death to the French!” as a group of brave Redcoats, crack Riflemen, and jolly Jack Tars sail into harms way on a desperate mission to the Barbary Coast to thwart the vile machinations of l'Empereur.

A game of military action and intrigue set in the fiction of the Napoleonic Wars and the Age of Sail. This game will use the Empire system which powers both Duty & Honour and Beat to Quarters two games inspired by the novels of Cornwell, Forrester, and O’Brian, that emulate the adventures of heroes like Sharpe, Hornblower, Aubrey, and Maturin.

A quick edit unless there is overwhelming demand for both, I am only running one game. I want to play!

Option 1
Deadlands
Gutshot, Wyoming was an unheard of town along the USA/CSA border until the infamous Confederate Mad Doc Rutherford was caught and arrested not ten miles down the road. Now he's cooling his heels in Gutshot's little one cell jailhouse until the union army can pick him up. The Confederate government won't be keen to see one of their brightest minds in enemy hands, and there's rumors that Ruthorford's equally mad kin are looking to free their 'pa as well. You, for reason's you're already beginning to question, have decided to take up the job of keeping Doc Ruthorford safe and able to stand trial until the cavalry arrives.
This is a Deadlands:Reloaded game using the Savage Worlds system.

Option 2
The Laundry
Image
The Book of Eibon is work of the legendary sorcerer Eibon of Mhu-Thulan, produced after Eibon's disappearance by his former apprentice Cryon of Varaad. The knowledge contained in this book has caused untold amounts of havoc over the centuries, and nearly lost us the war when the Reich found it in Syria back in '43. Since then it's been kept in the Laundry's archives safe from anyone who might misuse it again. Or it was until a negligent archivist lost in on a public bus about 6 hours ago. This could cause havoc if even read by your average citizen, or worse if it found it's way into the hands of a cult or unregistered necromancer. We need that book back!
This is a Laundry RPG game using the BRP system.

Hi all,

I'm new to this circus, but I'm friends with Savage Slacker and it looks like our Torrance-area gaming group is making a trip down to Hypen-Con. I may have seen you all at Strategicon last fall, but I'm excited to play some games :D

I'd like to pitch a scaled down version of a game we ran this past Autumn, which turned out surprisingly well, considering it was a system we don't really use for a premise that needed a bit of tinkering to make work.
Image
My Little Pony: Infernal Affairs (GURPS)
The Land of Equestria is led by the radiant Princess Celestia and the recently returned Princess Luna. However, day to day government is run by bureaucrats, the police, and, in particular, the Corralled Intelligence Agency.

The PCs (Earth Ponies, Pegasi, or Unicorns) are CIA agents who are tasked with investigating a rash of disappearances occurring all over Equestria. The answers you will find in your investigation may very well shake the very foundations of pony society. There are those who will protect the status quo, no matter the cost.

This is a GURPS game with a custom character generation ruleset. Presets will be made available, though I'll make chargen rules available early if people want to play.

Apocalyptic Strawberry Shortcake. Important distinction ;) Hyphencon 2010. And I sure wasn't (Steely/Geeky/Crazed?) enough to model it in GURPS. All I felt like managing was PDQ(Sharp-ish). My props to the Ponies' Stablemaster.

Also, this art from one of the players (pretty sure the artist was Steven or Derek):

Ok folks, we are entering the final push for throwing your hat in the ring for running a game. If you have been procrastinating, now is the time. The submission window will close sometime Monday morning (probably closer to afternoon, actually), so get them in this weekend if you want to be on the voting poll to run a game!

Summary of what we have so far:

SpaceMonkey Ashen Stars Ducktales mordraine Blackbird High School Pacific Blackbird Railway Lady Silver Age Avengers Bird BlanchPrez Hero City Danger Patrol Anarchangel Monster of the Weekcczernia MonsterHearts Lost Colony Savage Slacker In a Wicked Age (5 choices) mrlost Senior Citizen Slaughter 2 Servitor (Maid/Warhammer) mcellis King of the Street Fighters Rescue the Lady Cthulhu Deadlands The Laundry highoffpixels My Little Pony: Infernal Affairs

I'm counting 10 GMs and 17 games (if we minus one from the 'trying to slip one in' mordraine and count Savage Slacker's 5 options as different options on one submission - i think that's how he wanted it). Generally we need 8 games (2 sessions x3 games plus 1 backup game per each session) so we're going to be fine on having enough games regardless.

If you have a game you want to run, get them in by Monday morning!

We start the voting Monday, right after submissions close. The chosen few games will be decided by next weekend so GMs will have plenty of prep time, should they desire it. The voting thread serves as our RSVP as well, so be sure to vote even if you think all the games are awesome and couldn't possibly single out a few - I'll try and make sure there is an option for that on the poll. I will also post an update here to remind any thread subscribers to visit the poll thread when that goes up.

Hello all, I am new to wanting to run a game at Hyphen Con, and wanted to throw myself into the ring, as it were.

Return to Classics: You are a small group of adventurers whom have just finished their latest assignment from the guild and are enjoying a nice round of drinks and assorted 'entertainment'. While heading back to your headquarters you comes across a swamp where you hear sobbing coming from a small tree in the distance, in which you find a small girl, bound to said tree with horrific creatures 'toying' with her.

Something simple, I hope, but would lead to something more than just straight traditional.

Ok, submissions are officially closed! We've got a bunch of great games as usual, so head on over to the Voting Thread to tell us what you want to see run at The Hyph!

Please vote if you are coming to the con, even if you can't decide on games. This gives us a loose RSVP/headcount so we know what to expect. I'll make sure to include an option for the indecisive. Thanks.

Skyman & Galahad (and anyone I missed w/o a system in their post) - providing a system would be helpful as Devlin1 indicated. Let me know and I can update your poll option.
