Mike requested some info, and I figured a recap would be a good idea for everyone. I have some handwritten notes that aren't here, so I'm posting and will revise when I get home. Everyone let me know if I forgot anything, its been a little while.

Session 1 Recap:
[Pre-game: You all got invites - see document above.]

The group met in a tavern by the Javan Ferry (where the Javan River meets the main road in Sterich) and were then led by your guide along the road and into the southern region of Sterich where Baron Desmond Ulfort maintains his lands and keep in the region of [].

The Baron's lands seemed peaceful enough, but there was an anxiousness in the air and more guards than one would have expected if they did not know trouble was brewing nearby. An audience was immediately granted after everyone had cleaned from their travels and been fed heartily. Ulfort explained that recently activities by giants and other humanoids (and possibly other unknown threats) had increased greatly. His various mining interests were suffering disappearances of workers and attacks as well as general trouble in the area by (apparently) these same sources.

As the mines and the Jotens mountain range they are located in are Sterich territory proper and as mining is The main source of income for the land, this is quite troubling. The region has always had problems with giantkin and other humanoids (and certainly you all know of the major problems solved by your very own ancestors in the past), but the last years have been relatively quiet and everyone concerned would prefer things stay that way. Even the Earl of all Sterich has expressed concern and tasked Baron Ulfort with the duty of seeing to this problem.

You specifically were called for this task because of your relation to those that quelled the last serious giant uprisinig in these parts, but also because of strange portents and omens. Strange dreams had the Baron had of late, and they made him think of great heroes from the past and a new threat rising. He isn't sure exactly that these current issues are related to the past ones, but having great souls related to the heroes of old can only help his cause, so he spared no time in sending for you (others were contacted, they may show up later - ie, if you guys die ;).

The Baron tasked you with two initial specific tasks to help get you started on the overall problem:

1) Preempting his original instructions regarding the Steading Outpost (see below), he tasked you to see to a specific mine that he has received no word from recently. It is a fairly new installation and an important (and potentially very lucrative) site. He is concerned that something may have happened to it.

2) The Baron informed you that the old Steading (originally a Hill Giant Stronghold) has in later years been reclaimed and provisioned as the Steading Outpost of Sterich. Calvary, infantry, archers and some special troops are stationed there, though mostly the bulk of them are out on patrol - their main duty. It can serve as a secure base of operations for your investigations in the region. He supplied a letter of introduction to the captain in charge and asks that you proceed there as soon as your first task is done so you can begin investigations immediately.

Baron Ulfort then introduced you to Javan Rafter, one of his personal advisors, and offered his services on your missions as he noted you did not have a dedicated healer among your number. After that you were off to the mountains, escorted part-way by the Baron's guardsmen.

Once in the mountains and your guard escort had returned to the keep, you proceeded to the mines. A leucrotta was encountered, but other than that (rather odd) indigenous creature there were no further issues in reaching your goal. Once at the mine, it was obvious that something had happened - bodies strewn about, tools laying haphazardly on the ground, etc. Searching the area turned up no living soul but something was spotted in the wooded valley below the mine site. Investigation and battle determined that these were gnolls and yeth-hounds (a rather strange combination to be sure), and the likely culprits of the mine massacre. They had rather a lot of loot on them for gnolls also.

Returning to the mine, a more thorough search was conducted. Some miners were found trapped in a section they had caved-in to escape the attack [names]. After they were dug out and their tale heard it was decided to escort them back to the foothills so they could meet up with a patrol or make their own way through Ulfort's relatively safe lands and back to the keep to report, heal, etc.

Once the survivors were taken care of, the group returned to the valley and the site of the battle. Backtracking the gnolls (the yeth-hounds seem to have left no prints due to their flying abilities) led to a trail that had seen a decent level of use lately, and this was followed for a time. At this point a small boy [] was discovered off the trail in a rather cruel man-trap (like a bear trap, but with some modifications meant to make it more difficult for an intelligent being to get themselves out of it). He was freed from the trap and a gnoll-trail found nearby. Various options were discussed such as laying a trap for gnolls, etc. Eventually it was decided to take the boy along and continue the trail they were following [I think?] and soon ran into another group on the trail - this time gnolls and a hill giant. Battle ensued and the victorious adventurers looted the slain foes afterwards.

[did i get the order right there - mine, gnolls, mine, hills, gnolls+giant? I think so, but confirmation from another memory would help put me at ease]

.. and I think that's it. Lemme know if I missed anything, and I'll edit with any notes I have later.
