Hyphen Con 09: Vote for your favorite games

Serenity RPG: Tramps Like Us...were born to RUN!
The crew of the Kuh Wu Tramp is faced with getting a license to fly through the Korps Commercial area of the Verse. Captain Heller is faced with doing the long legal way of getting a license through the Alliance, which will take years, or go with her more tradition route of getting a license by the Verse black market, which is more expensive, dangerous and quick. Did I tell ya, Captain Heller loves her traditions. So the crew finds themselves meeting colorful folks like:

The Evil Tanuki (A low life scum on the Oricon black market trail who will tell ya where the best/worse deals can be found in the Verse)
Mitt 'Mitty' Egret (You've delt with him before and his thugs. A nasty customer as they come in these parts. Business with him can be torture)

Corporal Gordofsky (Yeah he busted ya on the periphery of the Korps Commercial area without the license. Lil' fast talk got ya away from him but he's got your number and is about to dial. Need to get the license!)

So yeah if you pick this I'll have to give myself a crash course in the system and watch Firefly to get me in the mood

Demon Hunters RPG: The Munchies
Omega 13 is on a mission to fufill the great foretold prophecy of the second coming of the great prophet who has been reincarnated through the divine Do-Knot.

Sounds great, right? Not really....you probably guesed that at this point. Remember this is Omega 13. You're right behind the crap mission lines with Omega 15; which as you know are a bunch of jerk wads who screwed up one of the most important missions in the history of the Brotherhood, as Alpha One, in Vancouver. The prophet is named Jerry... or Jer to his friends. He was known a big pot head who loved munching on donuts while seeing visions of the future. So the prophesy of the divine Do-Knot is really a donut. Yes a donut. He wasn't really great and would forget important details in his visions. Like his own death. But at least he new he would be back as a donut. Not an Eclair or bear claw. A Donut. So if you don't mind hanging out at the donut shop on the corner of Garnet and Grand waiting for the second coming then this will be cake...errr...donut in this case.

This another system I will be crash coursing if you choose this. I can't guarantee this will be as fun as reading the actual core book so set your expectations low because the book is a fun read.

Call of Cthulhu-Now: Loves Lonely Children
The Stars are Right! The adventure is about modern day punks, sleeze balls, addiction and the death of a young prostitute.

Yeah I offer to do CoC every year. This year I'm a lazy ass. Trust me. It's not even my scenario. I just read it and thought it was cool. By Richard Watts

In the Stronghold of the Drow
The nearby villages have been attacked as of late by a cadre of dark elf bandits. These elven brigands have waylaid travellers, stolen precious supplies and even raided small villages. They are, by all accounts, very ruthless. Who can stop them? And why are they committing these criminal acts after years of no action at all?

Well, as a member in good standing of the Crown Enforcement Cohort, that's your job now isn't it?

A low-level OD&D adventure (using the white-box rules, for that EXTREME OLD-SKOOL feel!!)

Four Weapons and a Funeral
Old friend,
It has been many years since we last saw one another. Do you recall the days when we were all happy together, and the Shao clan was still strong? I write to you now with sad news. Your former sifu, my father, Kang-Xi, is no more. It was his dying wish that one of his students should re-establish the Shao clan and return it to its former glory. As his daughter, I am charged with gathering the four of you here for the Ching Ming Festival to pay your respects and determine who is most worthy to take my father's place. It saddened him that you four, once such close friends, have been enemies for so long, ever since the day the Shao clan fell, but I hope you are able to put your differences aside for one day and fulfill Kang-Xi's final request.
--Shao Mei-Li

(A Spirit of the Fist adventure for four players.)

A Viking Is You
Rumors reach your ears of King Harald's cursed hall in Bjarmaland, beset by all manner of misfortune. The sheep give sour milk, ill winds wither the crops, and monsters prey on Harald's warriors. The skalds say that only a foreigner can bring peace to Bjarmaland -- and the reward is sure to be great, both in gold and glory. The call for heroes has gone forth! Grab your spear, strap on your shield, hoist your longboat's sails, and prove yourself worthy of Valhalla!

(An Agon adventure, with Vikings instead of Greeks, for any number of players.)

Star Trek: The Ends and the Means
It is a time of war. Casualties number in the millions, many of your compatriots among them. To make matters worse there are rumors of espionage within your ranks. And in 2375, the fate of the United Federation of Planets, the entire Alpha Quadrant itself faces conquest, or worse, annihilation at the hands of The Dominion. There's no end in sight. But Bajoran prophecy from dark places whisper of a hope. However, peace comes at a high ransom. How far are you willing to go to end the war?

Mirror, Mirror (a Legend of the Five Rings adventure)
In 1119, a elite unit of investigative magistrates was disbanded and scattered to the winds by an Imperial Tribunal for a crime they actually did commit. These men and women promptly busied themselves with their new lives, anxious not to bring further shame on their families. Today, unwanted by any government, they survive as samurai of the Fortunes. If you have an oni problem. If no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire, The (once) Honorable Magistrates of the Burning Feather (ret.)

[sound of clashing steel]

Finding themselves unknowingly reunited for Winter Court at Kyuden Hida, the former Magistrates are forced to contend with foul magics, internecine politics, and the secrets that once tore them apart -- in a Crab Clan castle on the edge of Jigoku itself.

"To hunt for one's self, for true meaning, is the greatest hunt of all." -- Togashi Genzo

"Do not seek that which you do not want to find." -- Bayushi

This is an adventure for five players, suitable to L5R newcomers or those who want to break out their formal LARPing kimono.

Resolutions Incorporated - Transhuman Space
After months of travel from Mars, the sleeper transport vessel Harmony has returned to the Earth-Luna system with scientists and other specialists be rotated back to Earth. Rather than it's scheduled landing run, the Harmony has slammed into abandoned He3 mining fields just outside Helium City. The crew is missing, and the ship's AI insane. The condition of the crew has not been released to the press. The local Lunar governments wants answers, and wants them before the planetside governments get involved. To this end, they've hired a team from Resolutions Incorporated, who specialize in unique situations like this.

Norman the Barbarian

Know, O Prince, that between the years when man first set foot on the moon, and the rise of the Sons of Obama, there was an age of legends, when mighty empires lay spread across America like shinning jewels beneath the Gods. The mighty religious power ruled by King Martin Luther, the reformer. The despotic dictatorship overseen by Uncle Sam, and may other, smaller kingdoms. But, the mightiest kingdom was that ruled by Emperor Norton, who gained the wrath of the evil sorcerer Saddam Bin Laden, who dared attack it directly. Into this world came Stormin’ Norman Schwarzenegger the Austrian from the frozen north of Canada. A barbarian, a general, a governor, with gigantic guns, and gigantic desires to see justice through, to trod the desert wastes of the Middle East under his booted feet, there to bring Saddam Bin Laden to justice at last.

Tonight’s Episode: Remains of the Lost Arc
When the God of Action himself, Chuck Norris, gives Norman and his pals a visit, they can’t refuse his mission. It seems Saddam Bin Laden’s troops have discovered the location of the remains of the mythical Lost Arc of Noah, and are planning on recovering it to use its magical powers in their war against America. Only Norman and his gang can stop them and recover the Arc for Chuck.

(NOTE: This game uses the system from Diana Warrior Princess, and is really only designed for about 3 players, thought I could accomidate 4)

Savage Lost (using Savage Worlds rules)
On a remote tropical island, a group of strangers finds themselves washed up on the shore, surrounded by a ship wreck, with no clear memory of what happened. The last they remember was heading for a vacation of a lifetime. Now, they are lost, and forced to work together to sruvive. As they explore their new island home, they discover they are being hunted, apparently by the people that sank their boat trying to finish the job, and that it's possible one of them is working with the hunters. What's really going on? Was this really an accident, or is something more sinnister going on? And on top of it all, why does everyone have the feeling that they're being watched? And more importantly, can they trust each other long enough to find out the answers to these questions?

The Monster's Revenge (4th Edition D&D)
The humans and their elven allies have trodden on your people long enough. First, they drive you away, then they declare you a threat and hunt you for sport. It is time for the tribes of the badlands to unite and strike back. You are one of the best of your tribe, and have been selected by the elders to work with the best of other tribes to enter the human lands, strike at one of their castles, and capture the princess that lies there. Bring her back alive so the tribal shamans can sacrifice her to the tribes dark Gods and bless the war that is to come. It is time for the Monster's Revenge!

Nobilis: Pirate Ninja Robot Zombie Superhero

The unlikeliest Famila Dei of all the worlds of the Ash consist of the Sovereign Powers of Pirates, Ninja, Robots, Zombies, and Superheroes. Although they would be the first to point out that few of these concepts actually exist anymore, thanks to the constant depredations of the Excrucians who have all but devoured their respective estates with exception of Pirates, Robots, and a lesser degree Ninja the others only survive today in fiction. However each is still championed by a Power, and vestiges of their estates survive within the confines of their Chancel.

Together can they halt the advance of their otherworldly Excrucian foe? Or will fanboys everywhere suffer the loss. You decide! Also you get to be gods.

It’s all things to all fanboys! It’s got ninjas! Monkeys! Robots! Robot ninjas! Monkey robots! Monkey robot ninjas! It’s in your face! It’s in your funny bone! It’s in the bedroom with your significant other while you’re running out to the video store to return that overdue copy of Plan 9 From Outer Space!

Revenge is a dish best served...IN SPAAACE!
The official and totally free demo of the game featuring a poorly thought out Robot Supervillian, a drug addicted genetically engineered psychic Chimp, a Gigalobot, and a Dude with a beautiful soul* who are all looking for pay back, yep you guessed it... IN SPAAACE!

What about Czernia's monsters game?
Monsters and Other Childish Things

Monsters are real.

You know because you have one. He's more fun and way tougher than all the other kids' monsters.

Try not to let him eat your friends.

Pregen characters will be provided but you will have to create your monster by first drawing him with crayons and then stating him out with powers.
Come on man, I've been wanting to try this for weeks now. I even dug out my old crayons.

I decided I would rather be a player at Hyphen-con after seeing all the great game. I'll be running MaoCT for meetup and GameX.

Burning Man 2012 didn't have a description, game system or anything other than a title. I decided not to include it. Same with Deadlands.

BlanchPrez put up so much description I decided to post his game twice

That's what happens when you don't pimp your game. You know what they say: No pimpin', no... shrimpin'? "Shrimping" here is slang for "getting your game included in a poll." All the kids are saying it these days.

How many games are we looking for here? It looks like we already have 6 clear winners, and if this trend continues, I'm thinking we won't even need a second round of votes.

Chris
Except that, right now, with only 12 people voting, we don't actually have enough people to play three games (in two time slots) simultaneously. Well, I guess we do, but they'd be pretty small games. Mord's OD&D game will be full-up, too, so that means seven people occupied in that game, leaving only five people to run and play two other games in that slot.

We'll let this poll run until next Thursday 3/5. I'll start an rsvp poll. We'll write out the top 4 games, and the top 6 games.

We'll schedule the top 4 games as definite as have one back up game for each time slot. We should have a good idea on how many games are being run after the rsvp poll.

If all 17 people who voted, give or take a couple (no-shows and surprise guests), show up to play, we'll have enough to run three games (of ~4 players) per slot. So... good!

Don't necessarily assume that attendance follows having voted. It might, but I'm not convinced.

Well, I did start the sentence with "If...."

I'm hoping to get as many as three people from my weekly group up here in OC to come down. One of 'em already lives in San Diego, nearish to SDSU, so he's a shoo-in, but the others are still up in the air. But they went to OrcCon, so I'm pretty confident I can talk them into this, too (which, as we know, is better than OrcCon).

Y'know, as enthusiastic a Strategicon fanboy as I am, I have to say that I never feel like I'm taking a chance on a game at Hyphen-Con. At Strategicon there's often some apprehension about whether or not the game/GM/players will be a good time, or the most annoying four hours of my weekend.

you have a point. by my account, in terms of the consistency of quality games, the hyph' way outshines the orc' (and for that matter, the gate' and the 'ex). but, there are aspects that the l.a. cons offer that the s.d. con can't offer... yet.

for example, staying up 'til unholy hours playing games in a hotel room (or hotel bar), playing traditional (like scrabble) and non-traditional (like tv trivia contest) non-rpg games, miniature painting, meeting new people, traipsing through the dealer's room, and eating subway sandwiches three meals in a row!

I've played and ran some of the best oneshots at the Strategicons. Of course I've also played in some real badones. Strategicon tends to be one extreme or the other where as Hyphen leans toward a comfortable middle (I think I have to be the one person who didn't have anyone show up for my game at a Hyphen-con).

Also, I see Hyphen-con more as a social activity. This is especially true since we don't do the bonfire anymore.

Yeah, that was where you let the door to the Anaheim Convention Center slam in the face of that old one-eyed Gypsy woman. She bit her thumb at you and spat, and ever since then you've had attendance issues at con games.

That's right Mike, I'm here to wreck up the place. And now that I'm officially on this forum and can make posts there is nothing you can do to stop me!

Looks like you folks have a nice little forum it's going to be fun messing it all up.

About Hyphen Con though I'm not sure I can attend yet, it also looks like I'm too late to run some games. So your convention is safe for the moment.

"Futurama" Nixon quote? Welcome home, my friend.

Well, I hope you can make it -- that'd be pretty sweet. It is indeed to late to pitch games -- blame that on Albert -- but like Albert said, after the second slot anything goes.

Well how late does the second slot usually go? I'm figuring if things usually start at 1pm and there are 2 games plus a break for dinner that means ~9-10pm, right?

Oh, it's a late night, no doubt, but that's how we roll. Feel free to crash at Mord's -- er, Andy's -- place.

Yeah and with a 2 hour drive added to the end of the evening it could get even later.

Move that two-hour drive to Sunday, though, and it's a whole different ballgame. I'm just sayin'.

Well does anyone have crash space? At the moment it's looking a little bit unviable given the time and distance constraints especially if I want to stay for the late gaming.

I don't live down there, so I wouldn't be the one to provide crash-space, but I can just about guarantee that someone else could.
