Tunnels & Trolls

Post by devlin1 »

So... I've been given reason to believe there might be some interest in a Tunnels & Trolls one-shot. This'd be the new 7th Edition, which I honestly believe even you jaded gamer-types will find to be pretty cool in its own odd ways. The system takes maybe 15 minutes to learn, but it's not for lack of awesomeness.

Before we get bogged down in dates and times, who'd be up for this?

I would love to, but past experience teaches me that I won't be able to make it.

Hey, it's non-d20, so you should have a good turnout. I'd play if I could. I have the old version, and I loved it. I even borrowed a couple of concepts from it for my game, EGO: Endless Gaming Options. [/shameless plug]

Seriously, I will keep an eye on this thread. If I can make it, I will. Even just to watch.

Okay, that's at least four (probably) and as many as eight. Sounds viable to me.

So when's good for people? Strictly Thursdays? Wanna do this next week? I'm pretty open, so throw some ideas out there.

Technically, I have a class on Wednesday night. I say "technically" because I don't actually have to attend, but I don't want to break my teacher's heart, either. Tuesday would be good; that's my usual gaming night. Of course, that leaves me... let's see... no time to prepare, really, but that's okay. After 3:30 tomorrow afternoon I'll be free of obligations.

And I don't know where we'd play. I'll drive down there, obviously, so anywhere that works is fine with me.

Neh, I'm not going to have much cash until monday-tuesday, somewhere in there - anything tuesday afternoon or after (except thursday), should work out fine. Though I'm likely going to have a work schedule starting on friday, so, yeah.

I'm glad Morgan brought up money, but you should act like it'll cost three bucks to play in this game. Because it's gonna.

No, not really. I guess it's what, a gas-in-the-car issue or something? Regardless, this won't be Monday night. It sounds like Tuesday seems to work for people. Does Tuesday seem to work for people?

If so, we can work on a venue next. Whew.

For purely selfish reasons, I'd probably pick Winter & Neuro's pad, because it's theoretically closer for me, and I'll be driving back home that night, so... yeah. Fortunately I work in an office that allows me crazily flexible hours.

Yay! So that's at least four of you, then-- assuming Andy and Liz are playing as well as hosting. And I assume they are. I mean, it'd be asinine not to play when the game's right there at your house.

Just finished my last final (w00t). Four hours of writing within five hours in two two-hour chunks today. Yeesh. I'm going to go see Narnia.

Rowr.

Sorry-- I just realized that that could be construed as a comment about Mord's wife, when in reality it's really a comment about Japanese schoolgirls. Actually, I'm not particularly attracted to Japanese schoolgirls, believe it or not, but I appreciate what they represent. I'm in favor of that. I'm on their side, I guess you could say.

Anyway, get that shit sorted out and join us on Tuesday, Mord.

So Tunnels & Trolls is totally not one of those games where we really need to go over mechanics or setting that much, but I thought I'd post these brief character descriptions of the available PCs just in case anyone wanted to whet his/her appetite. T&T is very much designed in the vein of old-school RPGs, in that it's almost goal oriented: go into the dungeon, fight the thing, get the stuff. Our game won't be quite that shallow, but it oughtta capture that old-school "fun."

Speaking of his/her, all the characters described below are male, but that's just for ease of writing. Anyone of them, apart from one (and even then...), could just as easily be female, so don't feel constrained, all you women in the group.

There are way more PCs than we need, but they're so damn easy to make I went nuts.
Fingers, Hobb Rogue:

A native of Gull, Fingers has been trying all his short life to gain acceptance into the Rogues’ Guild. Membership has its privileges, but it also has its price, and Fingers has never been able to pull a job big enough to qualify. It’s getting to be so that he’s actually considering taking semi-honest work to make his roguish ends meet. He figures that at the very worst he can earn the money he needs and then “convince” Marek the Guildmaster that he came by it dishonestly. It’s not a great plan, considering that Fingers can’t talk his way out of a paper bag (as he recently discovered, much to his chagrin), but if he’s lucky maybe he’ll end up stealing something along the way.

Thawg Ironbridge, Dwarf Warrior:

The Isle of Phoron is home to one of Trollworld’s proudest dwarven clans: Clan Ironbridge, so named because—as legend has it—their ancient ancestors once constructed a massive bridge connecting Phoron to the mainland, which Khazan destroyed in the course of conquering the Dragon Continent. Thawg dreams of his clan reclaiming the glory and status that they once held, and it is for this reason that he has left his beloved homeland. He aims to make a name for himself, and Clan Ironbridge, by dint of his valor and prowess in battle. He’s not picky about whom that battle involves, as long as he’s the one left standing at the end of it to shout the Ironbridge victory cry.

Skwib the Cunning, Kobold Wizard (Combat Specialist):

Skwib’s not from here. Far to the north is Khazan, where Lerotra’hh the Death Goddess presides over a huge city of monstrous citizens. Despite the status monsters enjoy in Khazan, Skwib came to discover, kobolds seem to occupy the bottom rung no matter who’s in charge. Being an intelligent and naturally-talented little lizard-thing, Skwib calculated his chances for advancement to be greater in the world at large, and has wandered his way down the Dragon Continent to the Island of Phoron. Gull does indeed seem like the kind of town Skwib can call home while his plans to crush the world under his kobold heel come to fruition.

Erol Fleetfoot, Human Rogue:

Erol’s in a tough spot. Last night he got a little too friendly with Sheik Achmed’s wife, and barely escaped before the enraged Sheik could exact his revenge. Erol’s not sure what form this would take, although he did hear the man shouting something about cutting off “anything part of your body that has befouled my wife with its touch!” Unfortunately, Erol’s rather fond of those body parts. He figures if he can lay low and stay out of sight for a week or two, maybe even get out of town, the Sheik’s anger will have found a new target, and he and his body parts can once again freely walk the streets of Gull.

Igon Silverbranch, Elf Wizard:

Igon hails from the Old Forest, in the shadow of the Great Escarpment. However, it’s another shadow, that of the sorcerer-butcher Marionarsis in his dreaded Overkill Castle, that hangs like an omnipresent cloud over the lands of Khosht and Knor. When Marionarsis’ troops began clearing the Old Forest to aid the war effort against the Death Goddess Lerotra’hh of Khazan, many of Igon’s people immediately took up arms in a brave albeit hopeless struggle to protect their homeland. Igon, however, was too smart for that. He made his way to the Khosht River, caught a boat out to sea, and ended up on the Isle of Phoron, in the City of Gull. Some would say he fled in a time of need. Igon would say he was merely protecting one of his people’s most valuable resources: himself. He’ll return to wreak his horrible vengeance on Marionarsis. One day. Honest.

Piotr Zonan, Human Warrior:

Piotr and his brother Dmitri had grown up hearing tales of adventure and daring from their uncle, Old Nehamkin. He spoke of the great thunder-lizards of the Khazani Plains, the terrifying beauty of the Death Goddess, the strange Gamesmen of Kasar, and, of course, Gull, the City of Terrors. Trapped as they were in their tiny village on the Isle of Kastos, though, the boys could but dream about these distant, fantastic lands. Or so Piotr thought. He awoke one day to find a note written in his little brother’s uncertain hand saying something about running away to Gull. Piotr, ever loyal (and a little jealous), followed and managed to make it to Gull. It’s almost nothing like Old Nehamkin described, and Piotr has begun to suspect that his well-spoken uncle might have also slightly exaggerated his past as a demon-horse-riding, flaming-sword-wielding warrior. In any event, Piotr’s heard rumors of kidnappings by a strange cult in the swamps outside the city walls which may sadly hint at his brother’s fate, but if he wants to continue his search he’s going to have to find some gold, because he’s broke.

Dwarf Warrior: Bluj the Wise

Bluj earned his reputation as a wise dwarf several years ago in the Axridge Mountains, from which he hails. When chosen at random (as is the custom of his people) to settle a dispute between a dwarven landowner and an orcish hunter, he carefully considered both sides of the story. The landowner claimed the hunter poached a deer illegally on his land, while the orc claimed that the animal had been killed a good two feet from the landowner’s border. In response, Bluj struck the orc senseless with his warhammer, and none could deny the wisdom of his judgment. Emboldened by this, Bluj has decided to wander the lands warhammering the wicked and dispensing wisdom where he can, particularly where orcs are involved.

Aegel, Elf Ranger:

Originally from the Ashgard Forest to the east, Aegel is a recent inductee into the Archers’ Guild of Gull who has been tasked with spreading the good name of the guild throughout the city. He’s also taken a vow to eschew all weapons except bows. Although he’s expected to keep his word as a matter of personal honor, new recruits like Aegel are subject to random scryings from wizards hired by the Archers’ Guild. Breaking the oath is punishable by breaking his hands. Aegel may be a lot of things, not the least of which is an incredibly-skilled archer, but he’s no liar. Aegel’s an elf who keeps his promises.

Fitz, Hobb Warrior:

Fitz likes to refer to himself as a “problem solver.” Whatever your problem, Fitz has the answer. If you need someone killed, he’s got a pair of razor-sharp hatchets. If you need some quick gold, he’s got the dice. If you need a drunk hobb, he’s open to that. Fitz’s primary source of income is the Black Dragon Tavern’s gaming tables, but that’s also his problem: he’s in deep to Marek, Guildmaster of the Rogues’ Guild. Very deep. Break-your-legs deep. Unless Fitz can come up with the money fast or somehow make it out of Gull (not an easy thing to do when the people you’re trying to elude are the ones who control all the secret routes out of town), he’s going to have a problem he can’t solve.

Url the Marvelous, Human Warrior:

Url has seen things you can’t even imagine. He’s been places. He’s fought in the famed Arena of Khazan. He’s held his own on those bloody, sun-drenched sands against no fewer than three fearsome opponents. Url can take whatever you can dish out, friend, and pay you back with interest, because Url’s not afraid to mix metaphors. Url’s real Arena experience isn’t quite as bold as he makes it out to be. He fought off an anemic gremlin, stabbed an uncoordinated orc in the back, and was knocked unconscious by a young human wizard. However, he’d technically survived three fights, as was required per his contract, and was released. Now, back in Gull, far from the Arena and further from the truth, he’s something of a legend—and if you haven’t heard, he’ll be the first to tell you.

I'll decide when we're at the table, but Skwib makes me want to play him like Stewie.

I wanna be Bluj. Bluj should be a girl. Bluj wisely thinks that Bluj is a fine name for a girl. Does anyone disagree?

I was considering making Bluj a woman (er... "wodwarf") by default, but then I didn't. But sure.

Many of those characters have potential. I'll wait to see what's needed.

By those descriptions, I'm totally getting an "Another Day Another Dungeon" feel. Sweet!

Bluj and I can forgive you for making the mistake. All you humans look the same to her, too.

That was a lot of fun. Although we never figured out who dumped us in the sewer. I'd like to know what that was all about!

Hey, it's the City of Terrors, not the City of Answers. It's also the City of Railroading PCs Through a One-Shot So That Everything's Nice and Linear.

Basically, after you were hired, you all got drunk, then were waylaid by some ruffians in the streets. They knocked you out (not tough to do in your inebriated state), dragged you into an alley, and were rifling through your belongings when the city guard showed up. Rather than stay and fight, they took what they could and dumped your bodies into the sewers to hide the evidence. The rest is history. I understand the confusion, but then again your PC would've been equally confused, so I was perfectly comfortable with leaving that unexplained. But later on, when you get back to town, um... someone tells you what happened. Yeah.

Anyway, thanks all-- I had a great time, and I'm glad you all had fun. I oughtta run stuff more often. Not because I'm a great GM, but because I enjoy the sound of my own voice.
