Unknown Armies: Casting Call

Post by BreakfastOfChampions »

Jake/Janet “MadDog” Roberts
Jakes a wirey man in his early 30’s who calls himself a professional drifter. He’s on parole, for starting a brawl at an AA meeting, screaming “Fuck you pussies, it takes stamina to be a drunk!” He seems to the outside world as short-tempered, crotchety and careless. In the occult underground, he’s considered sharp and canny, with little time for the real world. He’s been a boozehound most of his life, working the power of dipsomancy, which draws minor power from drinking, and major power from drinking from a cup or glass with historical importance. With a slight buzz, he can make small objects fly around and strike with accuracy surprising from someone so drunk. When he’s really tied one on, spirits take on a whole new meaning, and he can drink souls.

Its taboo for Jake to sober up. If he does, he loses all his magical charges until he can get drunk again.

Tina/Tim Blake
A quiet, retiring librarian, Tim can be lost in a crowd, which is just how he likes it. Tim is a cobweb farmer, a cliomancer who draws power from places of historical interest. To the outside world, Tim is shy, unassuming and easy going. To the occult underground, Tim is a driven seeker of historical places. Cliomancy is a subtle magic, which doesn’t even have a ‘blast’ power to bludgeon foes. To the unknowing, it makes cliomancers weak. To those in the know, cliomancers are to be feared, as when they find a place of minor historical influence, they can steal secrets and make them common knowledge. Gathering power from a place of real historical influence, like “the grassy knoll”, cliomancers can plant memories into unsuspecting victims. Tim travels a lot, gathering his power. With so much travel, Tim has trouble holding a job.

Its taboo for Tim to let his charges sit around too long, and can only hold on to them for a month before they fade.

Larry/Laurie Coreman
Wild and adventurous, Larry is one of the few who appear to the outside world as they do to the occult underground. The outside world sees Larry as a crazed risk taker, who likes to play chicken with trains, jump over cars, and flirt with rattlesnakes. In the occult underground, he’s called a body bag, or entropomancer. The bigger the risk to himself and/or others, the bigger the charge he gets. Taking minor risks lets him influence probability, while taking major risks lets him *control* it. Larry also spends a lot of time in clinics, because not every risk works out. Larry hasn’t been able to get health insurance for a long time because he gets fired for burning all his sick days.

Its taboo for Larry to get someone else to take a risk he’s unwilling to take. If he does so, he loses all his built-up charges.

Cecil/ia Begman
Cecil can barely keep a job at the coffee shop. He makes even the tattoo and piercing fetishists nervous because he just keeps doing it. Razors, lighters, pins, needles – he’s done it all, and then done it all again while hanging upside down. He’s also on parole for nearly killing a tattoo artists who was going to add some art to a tattoo. To the outside world, Cecil is self-destructive and insane. To the occult underground, he’s a sharp and capable fleshworker, or epideromancer. He gets small charges out of hurting himself, cutting himself with a razor, or even hitting himself with a hammer. He can use the power to heal himself and others – as long as the damage wasn’t used to generate the charge. He gets more power with branding himself, and can literally slaps someone’s face off.

Its taboo for anyone to alter Cecil’s body but him. Even a haircut will cause him to lose all his charges.

Hans/Greta Dvorak

Hans actually can hold a job! He owns a small watch shop in a mall. Polite and slightly forgetful, Hans is in his mid-40’s. Those on the outside that even notice him see him as a jovial, helpful watch shop owner. In the occult underground, he’s a ‘clockworker’ of a different breed. His magic style is mechanomancy, which involves the art of creating clockwork creatures and imbuing them with artifacts of historical significance, or by giving up his memories to make them. Hans has a several smaller clockworks which can protect and serve him. While Hans doesn’t have a ‘blast’ power. His clockworks can deal up a lot of hurt.

It is taboo for Hans to make a clockwork with any equipment invented past 1800. Those clockworks fail automatically.

David/Darlene Brooke
David’s all about the money. He’s got the clothes, and he’s got a fancy car. His house? Well, that’s not so nice. He’s definitely about the bling. Too bad his fiancé dumped him when the ring was only worth a few hundred smackers. People say he stuffs all that cash he gets from wheeling and dealing in a mattress, but he’s a little too savvy for that. He puts it in the bank, and he doesn’t spend it. No way. No how. Even when he can afford something with cash, he uses his credit cards, and makes the minimum payment. His “friends” think he’s screwy. In the occult underground, he’s crazy as a fox. David is a plutomancer – a money mage.
To generate charges, David gets money. The more money, the more charge. While some of his magic generates money for him, he can’t get charges from it. His ‘blast’ power makes people hurt themselves. The rest of his powers are all about bringing things to him. With enough power, the mountain will come to Mohammed. Given enough power, he can find out what people *really* want, or make them kill themselves. Its all about acquisition.

It is taboo for David to spend 1000 dollars on any one thing. Even multiple things, if in a bill that totals over a grand, will drain him of all his charges.

Kirk/Daisy “Hammerhead” Higgens
Unlike most of his friends, Kirk has a steady job! During the day, Kirk works at a sex shop, wiping down glass walls and re-sorting the porn movies on the booths after someone thinks its funny to swap “Busty Mammas” with “Homo Hoedown” (jerks). At night, he’s an extra in the porn industry, and sometimes even gets a leading role. No one with a brain thinks the work is glamorous, and he tells everyone in the outside world he moonlights as a ‘consultant’ Instead, he’s a porn “star” – hooked on enhancers and boosters, everything from Viagra to crushed bat shit. Most in the ‘industry’ figures no one will give a crap about him in more than 2 years. In the occult underground, Dirk is a pornomancer – a sex mage. A follower of the naked goddess – one of the 333 archetypes, he gets power from acting out scenes from the naked goddess movies. There are some rituals, but the real power comes from acting out a scene from her life or her movies that *no one* has ever acted out before.
Pornomacers are masters of synchronicity. Stuff just ‘falls’ into place. People find things *don’t* go their way around a pornomancer who whammies them. Lies fall apart, and even the most outrageous suggestions from the pornomancer seem completely reasonable. Blast? Yup, a pornomancer can, but they have to be having sex with the person to make it happen. Then they get a charge *and* get to kill them.

Its taboo for a Pornomancer to have sex for any reason other than gathering charges. Needless to say, Kirk’s life is more screwed up than your average porn star’s.

Mike Spade
Not everyone in the occult underground is a mage. Alex Abel is this rich dude who has hired a cadre of mages and thugs to get stuff done. Alex want immortality, but not in the conventional sense. Somewhere, in the tomes of lunatics and prophets, lies the secret to becoming one of the 333 Archetypes, and re-making the world in your own image. Lots of people want that power. Lots of people would lie, cheat and steal for it. Lots of people would kill, with *extreme* prejudice.

That’s where Mike comes in. A librarian with a shotgun, mike has had a crash course in the occult to add to his already prodigious skills in legbreaking and firearms. He’s one of Alex Abel’s ‘consultants’, and doesn’t mind doing a little freelance work to make ends meet. Unlike the cabalists, trying to struggle to maintain the semblance of a normal life and job while exploring the occult underground, the occult underground *is* his job.

I tried to cover one character from each discipline of magic, and a typical tough.

I hope people grab characters quickly, as there are some rather specific rules for each magic type, that 1) make the magic interesting and 2) make it a pain in the ass because they are not exactly consistant.

But if magic was consistant, it would be science :)

So, if you have a particular character you want. Grab them and then I'll start sending you the lists of the spells they can do.

Always with the hard questions :)

So much depends on how the casting call goes. If I get a bunch of people who haven't seen or heard of the game before, I can use Bill in three Persons. If not, I have to cook my own.

If I can use BiTP, then the next open Thursday would be fine, keeping in One-Shot tradition.

If not, then The *following* open Thursday would be good. I put my trust in the keepers of the One shots to know when these are.

And we have our chaos mage/body bag! One of the cool things about them is their 'blast' power disrupts the body of the victim. At low power, welts in the shape of letters or designs appears on the victims body. At higher levels, their heads blow up. Not quite as artistic, but effective nonetheless.

Cool beans. We can go over some of the magic if you show up early tonight. If not, we'll definitely get it.

Is it just these characters or is history always an important part of UA?
Is it just these characters or is history always an important part of UA?
Its more a way to convey information about the UA universe. Some of the important things:

1) Being a worker of magic is your big thing, and everything else is a distant second. Mages have trouble holding jobs and maintaining social contact with 'normals'

2) The brief history was a way to set the tone of the game, which pushes itself as a game of transendental horror and furious action. Its wacky, so I tried to make the characters kind of wacky.

I was thinking of history in a more general sense.

The powers of Roberts, Blake, Dvorak, & Higgens all seem to be predicated on history or historical significance. Higgens in an interesting way in that he recreates something that happened once but no one else has recreated. But for all of them what has happened to a thing, place, or person is the difference between a little power and a lot of power.

You're right about that, though the fleshworkers, body bags, boozehounds, and money bags don't worry about history. Though boozehounds get more mojo from drinking out of a significant cup, with significant being usually historical significance.

I'd be in for this, but I know absolutely nothing about Unknown Armies (less than I thought, actually). I know that's not an obstacle, per se, but... there. Also, I'd really need to know when this would be happening, because it's kind of a drive for me, so I'd want to make sure it's doable.

And since I know nothing about UA, I wouldn't care who I end up playing. Ta-da!

I would like to be in on this too. I haven't had time to actually read through the character descriptions yet though, so I'll take whatever's left, if there's anything left. Also, I know squat about UA, so I'll be a virgin. Be gentle.

This coming Thursday is an open Thursday. Next Thursday is Vamp. The Thursday after that is another free Thursday.

Thank you, Unca Mord (and CCZ, I just happened to see Mord's first), and there should be plenty of characters left. If none of them tickle your lower left fancy, I can always make up more.

Okay, so that means I'm looking at May 12. I'd like to say I'm so good, I could just whip something out this Thurs, but I'm not that uber, especially with another game in the queue.

I promise to pretend to have no idea what is going on if you let me play. I'll be absent minded, nebbish, and follow the others. And I'd like to be Hans Dvorak, if I have to have magick. Clockworking is *da bomb*.

I need to check on what days my finals will be on, but it shouldn't be a problem.

Well, if you played, I'd just run something else. No biggie for me, really, but you'll just have to get better, gimpy. Maybe, if BiTP goes well enough, I'll run another -- one that BiTP people won't have too much inside info for.

Non Adepts:
Blake Gannon: Investigative Reporter.
At least, that's what he's calling his latest dive into muckraking. He used to call himself a PI, until someone mentioned some sort of License thing or something. So, it was easier to get into Journalism. Just get some certificate from the Iowa School of Chirstian Journalism -- more of a contest to see how many times you can use the word 'Jesus' in a sentence -- and you're off and running. Gannon has a keen eye for detail, especially the embarassing ones that come off good in print. Working for small outfits, he's used to handling his own camera, and writes under several bylines.

Terry Burke, Medium
A channeler of the mysterious and unknown -- well it beats working men's rooms in Detroit. Check the obits, and find the relatives, throw in a few obvious details (a little research and B&E) helps here, and wow, these people will fork over the cash to say the things they think they meant to say in life. Suckers. Well, until one seance went really bad, and you started talking like a 13 year old girl with a voice a man shouldn't have in *life*. Suddenly the scam took a whole new turn for the weird.

Jamie McDurmmit, Construction Worker
Loves his porn and handguns. Got drunk and accidentally shot his wife in the head playing 'William Tell'. He still has the highball glass he failed to hit. Still loves his handguns and sometimes talks to his dead wife, which is fairly often. He misses her -- even the fighting. He still works construction, and is fairly good at it, but his muttering really bugs some of the coworkers. Luckily, its seasonal.

Mathew Cutting, Lawyer
Mathew was doing very well as a defense attorney. He was sharp, persuasive, and charismatic. It really didn't matter whether they were guilty or not, he plays to win.
