Okay, the game's called Aleph Null, and the genre is Cyberpunk. This game is going to be based off of some work I did on a game about a year ago. Recycling work is a beautiful thing, especially when it's stuff that otherwise probably would've never seen the light of day. I'm still developing it (and haven't decided on a system, tho GURPS seems likely), but I figure I'll go ahead and post some old flavor text and info so you can get a feel for it. Comments, suggestions and criticisms are all welcome.

Bah. GURPS light would be a great thing. Free online. Without quite as many headache inducing options as the full version, if I recall.

I'm liking CP 2020 more and more - though the netrunning stuff is distinctly 1980's...

I'm 95% sure we'll be using GURPS 4th edition. Nobody will be expected or required to purchase the corebooks. GURPS lite is great for getting people into GURPS, but I like a lot of those "headache inducing options". I suppose I should warn, up front, that I dislike "cinematic" roleplay as it is too often defined.

Too often, people use "cinematic" to mean rules light, or unrealistic. I've seen a lot of "cinematic" systems degenerate into "I hit for 5 points of damamge." Booooooooring. Those headache inducing options, used correctly, mean you get things like "The .45 caliber round slams into your left calf, cracking bone and severing your anterior tibidial artery." Might be the same overall effect, game-wise, but I find the latter tends to lead to better roleplay.

I guess that's another point to bring up. In modern or near-modern settings (such as cyberpunk), I prefer realistic combat. Short interpretation... getting into fights can HURT. Random gunfights have a tendancy to get people dead, real quick. Choose your battles wisely, and try to prepare so that they happen on your terms.

That said, for those of you who are new to GURPS, check out:

I'm all for the above. Expect me to go through several six packs before I even remotely gel with the rules. I don't have a problem with GURPS, but I think my previous experiances may have fucked me up. I'm reasonably sure the group I played with had a few things just -grieviously- misinterpredted from the book.

The rules (extremely short version):

You wanna do something (Drive a car). Check your skill (Driving). Add/subtract modifiers. Roll 3d6. Did you roll less than or equal to your modified skill? Congratulations, you've succeeded!

That's it! Not terribly complex, nor particularly difficult. Sure, there are other rules, but that system's the one used for the great majority of them.

Yeah, if I can manage GURPS rules, you can.

Looks good so far Andy. I'm fine with whatever system you choose. Have you figured out what type of characters you are looking for?

Well, that's one of the things I like about GURPS... it's classless. :) I'd be very interested to see what sorts of characters appeal to people. Just about anything can be worked in, although I'd prefer if you guys choose characters who aren't going to kill each other on sight (we've got Paranoia XP for that, after all).

I'd like to play the girl I was going to NPC on Aleph, but souped up a little, maybe. Girl from the DMZ, the one who came into Roscoe's after nearly getting run over by a minivan.

Lain was Eevee's. I don't remember her name. She was a hispanic girl. I'll dig up her background...

Or... mmm. Something corporate and creepy? Do you have a scope narrowed down yet?

I'd like to get a general idea of what people want to play, and what kind of game they're looking for. I'd prefer not to have to drag out an extra sharp plot hook just to get you people to talk to each other.

For some reason a cop appeals to me though in what capacity I am unsure. I like the Homicide division but the CRASH division sounds cool too.

I think a CRASH cop would kick ass. Ever see Training Day?

Thats exactly why I like the idea though the Homicide appeals to me because of my background in analytical sciences.

I like CRASH because it's more action oriented and gives you a plausible tie-in to at least one other character. :)

I dun remember the name. I'll look for her info in my archives. Unfortunately, I may not have much left and have to start form scratch. I could see a potential tie-in to a CRASH officer.

Training day would be an awesome movie to watch during character generation. C'mon, it's LA.

I'm sorta thinking of a cop as well... or something along the lines of the security guard character that showed up in "Virtual Light" and "Idoru". I'm envisioning an "imported" soft spoken southerner type with a BFG...

I've got the movie now, you're welcome to swing by tomorrow and watch it with us, or you can grab a copy from me.

A security guard character could be very cool as well, and I think you'd do a good job of it. :)

Maybe one from New Eden, Smartmonkey? That'd be very true to the VL concept.

Liz, you're a genius.

I have my character. Mostly. Going to have to go back and re-read VL now.
