I've been looking into software for making both interior and world maps. Hopefully one that is not limited to medieval setting. Does anyone know of a good free (or cheap) map maker?

A lot of people like fractal mapper. I used an older version of it and it was alright, but I was never into making maps.

I've used Campaign Cartographer 2 (along with the add-ons Dungeon Designer and City Designer), and I find them to be overly complicated in some ways. I guess that's the price you pay for versatility. They weren't real cheap, either, back when I bought them. I'm pretty sure there's a new version out, though. Maybe it's been improved.

What I've been looking at lately, though, is Dundjinni, which looks nice. My wife and I messed around with the demo, and it seems pretty simple.

Campaign Cartographer - http://www.profantasy.com
I have this (as well as the Dungeon add on) and it's great. You can do maps of villages, interiors or even space maps. It's great and easy to use once you figure out the interface.

Fractal Mapper (See link above) - Never used it, but it gets lots of good reviews and the maps I've seen from it are great.

Dundjinni - http://www.dundjinni.com/
It's new, but I've been looking at the screen shots lately, and they look good. I think I actually like the graphics from this better than CC, though I've used that for a long time now.

All three of these have demo versions, so you can try them out before buying any of them.
