No argument there. For the sake of balance, the GM should retain a degree of "veto" power. The PC's should have a say, however, in the history of their characters. Also, having the ability to add flavor to "descriptive text" keeps the game interesting, and the GM on his/her toes!

Wizards actually has quite a bit to say on this subject. Surprisingly, they advocate giving the players alot of creative control. I have to say that I agree. Your players have a huge amount to offer the game. Just reacting to what you (the GM) have set out before them doesn't seem all that exciting....

I like BP's idea for using surges to recharge encounter powers. The temp HP or unrestricted minor action usage would mean you'd need to ramp up the difficulty of your encounters, just to keep them challenging. Maybe the other option is just to HR them out? Given the sporadic nature of your group, I ...

Suspension of disbelief is all in how you play the game. You could have the shoddiest written setting or game, but if the GM and players playing the game run it as if it were "real," it doesn't really matter, does it? Even the best written game system or setting can have its SoD ruined by ...

The trick here is the fact that these kids are home-schooled. As such, they're not the pop-culture repositories that we gamers tend to be, and so, their thought patterns may be a bit . . . alien to what you're used to. While it's something I tend to do anyway, here I'd use the first session (or two)...
