One of the original Sword & Sorcery series is the Lankhmar books by Fritz Leiber. Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser. It should give a reasonable flavoring if Conan is too cliched.

Is there any reason not to use different systems for the different eras? That might promote a shift, although it might be more work as well.

The golden age description screams Spirit of the Century to me. However, I'm not sure that it would scale well with your description of the other ages.
