Re: Hyphen-Con 2014::Pimp Your Game! [Now With Voting!]

Hey, I just wanted to let you all know that I might not be able to make the Hyph this year. I've had a family emergency come up and I might be out of state when HyphenCon happens. Since I'm supposed to be running a game you might want to pick an alternate game for my slot just in case.

Sorry,

Star Trek with Atomic Robo The RPG

Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Endeavour. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no one has gone before. Play classic Star Trek using the new Fate Atomic Robo The Roleplaying Game rules. Bold Action and Logical Science In Space!

The Day After Ragnarok Fate Edition

Welcome to the end of the world. The skies are shrouded with burning, oily smoke, the Earth groans under the poisoned corpse of the World Serpent brought low by atomic fire. The year is 1948 and it has been three years since the Nazis summoned Jörmungandr and both Raganrok and WW2 ended with the serpentfall. Play the new Fate version of this dieselpunk, Submachine gun and Sorcery world. See it smolder, see it burn, see if you can save it.

Re: Hyphen-Con 'Ocho' -- Pimp Your Game

So I've got a couple of ideas for Hyphen-con games, but I think I've narrowed it down these two:

King of the Street Fighters
The City is overrun by crime, the gangs control the streets, ninja violence is on the rise, and terrorism is rampant. The police are helpless, and only a small group of vigilante martial artists, professional street fighters, and lone ninja warriors still fight for justice, glory, and honor.

Now Mr. Big is holding a martial arts tournament, which has drawn in fighters from all over the world; at the same time he is holding the city hostage. You all have reasons to fight, but are you a bad enough dude to unleash your fatal fury in a final fight on the streets of rage in a contest of mortal kombat to prove you have mastered the art of fighting and crown your self the King of the Street Fighters?

A game inspired by classic arcade fighting games and beat ’em ups, using a modified version of the FATE system.

Rescue the Lady
Lady Barbara Melville - the sister of one of the King’s closest advisers - is lost, missing and presumed captured by brigands from the Barbary Coast. News has reached Lisbon that if that was not reason enough to dispatch forces to recover her, she is to be auctioned off to the highest bidder and one of those bidders is an agent of Napoleon himself. This outrage cannot stand and therefore a crack company of infantry are being sent on the speediest frigate available to enforce the will of the King on the heathen. The Barbary Pirates are a very different foe to the French and for the honour of the Duke of Wellington and the crown, the Lady must be rescued.

The Napoleonic Wars rage across Europe, only Great Britain and her allies stand against the evil Tyrant Napoleon Bonaparte and his sinister plans of world conquest. It’s time to fix bayonets, clear for action, beat to quarters, and cry “Death to the French!” as a group of brave Redcoats, crack Riflemen, and jolly Jack Tars sail into harms way on a desperate mission to the Barbary Coast to thwart the vile machinations of l'Empereur.

A game of military action and intrigue set in the fiction of the Napoleonic Wars and the Age of Sail. This game will use the Empire system which powers both Duty & Honour and Beat to Quarters two games inspired by the novels of Cornwell, Forrester, and O’Brian, that emulate the adventures of heroes like Sharpe, Hornblower, Aubrey, and Maturin.

A quick edit unless there is overwhelming demand for both, I am only running one game. I want to play!

I didn't actually play in the Dungeon World but I watched the last half hour of it and it looked like folks were having a great time.

But I can answer your question it's both, mechanically it is a Apocalypse World hack, but it really tries to capture the retro feel of D&D even if it doesn't use the rules.

I bow to your superior Google-Fu.

Well order it already! It's an awesome setting, and the Savage Worlds Edition has now been reprinted and is back in stock. Why do you hate both Freedom and Jörgmungandr?

Spirit of the Blank is updated with great frequency compared to some other sites I could mention. The project hasn't even been announced on the Atomic Overmind page.

But I feel we are getting away from the real purpose of this thread. GMs get your lazy ass games out on the street, they can't make you money unless you put them to work on the corner. Keep your GM Hand Strong! and keep on pimping your games. Today is the last day!

Well I stand corrected I guess it has been publicly confirmed. At the same time though I never like to talk up upcoming games on the internet too much, at least until I hear that they are at the printers or already published. There have been just too many disappointments and years spent on anticipation of upcoming games that seem to never materialize.

I'm looking forward to an official SotC version of DAR, but I've yet to see any word of it on either Lenny's or Atomic Overmind's blog pages. Plus with friend's games it's always hard to know when you're breaking their trust and or some sort of NDA by talking about projects they are working on. Not everyone has a design blog where they keep folks so well updated on their projects. ;)

Curse this two game limit, I have too many game ideas to give. But here we go.

Shadowrun (FATE Rules)

A Mirrorshades and Pink Mohawks style game using FATE rules to deliver a high octane game of Shadowrunning action. Magic and Machine, meets Metahumanity on the neon lit, rain soaked, mean streets of Seattle.

Day After Ragnarök (FATE Rules)
Know, O Prince, that between the years when the Serpent fell and the oceans drank America and the gleaming cities, and the rise of the Sons of Space, there was an Age undreamed of, when nations guttered low and flared brilliant across the poisoned world like dying stars—California and Texas each claiming the flag of the West, France torn asunder and facing the desert, harsh Mexico, slumbering Brazil, Argentina where the seeds of Thule lay waiting, ancient lands of Persia and Arabia and Iraq between two empires, the coldly clutching Soviet Union whispering behind its Wall of Serpent, Japan whose warriors wore steel and silk and khaki. But the proudest kingdom of the world was Australia, the last green and pleasant land, ringed around by its dominions and bulwarked by the sea...
I've been itching to give Day After Ragnarok a spin using the FATE rules. It's a WWII post apocalypse game of Serpents, Sub-Machine Guns, and Sorcery. The game will probably take place in the Poisoned Lands of America, but who knows the setting is incredibly rich.

Okay, a few quick questions about the Hyph.

What time does it start, where is it located, how many game sessions are there, and does anyone have any crash space?

I learned my lesson about trying to drive back at 2am after a full day of Hyph and have decided that and the chance to get some boardgaming has tipped it over the edge into a 2 day trip. But that means I or whoever I come down with will need a place to crash.

We've also been pondering taking the train and so we may need rides locally as well, but I don't want to impose.

Thanks.

I have only done the Hyph once so I don't know if there is a usual yet, but that time I did do it as a one day thing. However I think if I am able to do it again this time I'd at least try to spend the night somewhere in San Diego as I was a very tired panda and a danger to myself and everyone on the road driving back at 2am.

So if I am staying overnight it would be silly not to stick around for some boardgaming and hanging. But I would try to leave SD at a reasonable hour. Why do you ask?

Yeah it was great to see all of you as well and I was especially glad that I got to play in that Og game, it was good a time with prehistoric hijinx.

As for the games I ran they went well and I am now of the opinion that while the Dresden Files Evocation magic system can model Avatar style Element Bending quite well, it can't quite handle the level of over the top WuXia levels of Bending I wanted to model in my game. So that one still needs a little work.

My Changeling Rock Band DFRPG game went off better than I had any right to expect it to, I didn't do nearly enough prep and was operating on not nearly enough sleep. However I was playing with a stacked deck of awesome players and they really helped me rock out that game.

So again good to see you all; hopefully I can make it to the Hyph, but if not I'll hope to see you all at Gamex.

Wasn't trying to rub it in. In fact I remember a few years back when I first got to LA and started running games at Strategicons I had a couple of games where no one showed up or signed up, and a few where I didn't have enough players to run. I've also been skunked when I've run stuff at other regional cons where no one knew me or my games.

I was more surprised by Albert's problems with no shows or flakers especially since no more than half the spots can be pre-reged, I wouldn't think that lack of space for on site sign ups would be that big of a problem. Most of the times I've tried to get into Albert's games they've either been full or close to it. In fact I missed his last Og game because it was filled up.

Mike,

I've been told I must run Venture Brothers again but the next time I run it there must be a game there, rather then an excuse to improv an episode.

Chris,

Well almost all the Characters in Doom of Damocles have some powerful magic as well as being fairly bad ass physically. Whereas the Minor Talents are just that Minor Talents though they are fairly powerful minor talents they still don't have the levels of magical muscle to throw around.

And as I was saying I think the fact that you didn't see much of a difference was my fault, I didn't make it clear that the Doom characters were armed with the Magical equivalents of rocket launchers and machine guns while the minor talents maybe had the Magical equivalent of knives and pistols.

I was talking to Dan Sherer who played the Crippled R&D Enchanter in the second run through of the Doom game and I was explaining his level of power and all of the bad ass magic he could have been using, and he was like "Wow, I didn't know I could do any of that! If I'd known I would have made different choices in the game." So again my bad, I'm going to be putting together cheat sheets that will hopefully spell that out to people, as well as making it clear at the table.

Morgan.

Well I'm glad you had a good time with Dresden. Honestly it totally is FATE there isn't a whole lot that's mechanically different, really it's more of an expansion of the FATE system to allow some new and interesting subsystems and effects. Also a powers system that goes above and beyond Stunts, that you might want to take a look at.

Also I totally failed to make people understand how powerful their characters were magically in that game. Just about every character in that game was at least magically equal to Harry Dresden in the first few books, and Harry is ridiculously overpowered as a starting character. You weren't Earth's sorcerers supreme or anything, but you all had mucho mojo.

Dude these are Uniforms! What's your excuse?

Tales of the Slayers: The Mystic Voyage of the Slayer"
The Seas of Adventure beckon once more. Now to save the Kingdom from a plague of the Undead, the Slayer must set sail with Sinbad on a dangerous voyage to a mysterious and forbidden land filled with terrifying monsters and demons. Will the Slayer along with Sinbad and his fearless crew return from their voyage with the key to save the Kingdom? Dresden Files RPG: Major Problem, Minor Talents
Supernatural trouble is brewing on the streets of the Big Apple, and everyone with even an ounce of mystic talent can feel it. The war raging between the White Council and the Red Court Vampires has left both sides weakened and distracted. The Wardens are nowhere to be found; most minor talents are keeping their heads down and just trying their best to stay alive. But when the local Paranet group discovers a dangerous threat is stalking minor talents on the streets of New York. They know it’s way out of their league, but if they don’t even try to stop it, who will?

So I'm really going to try to make it down to Hyphen-Con from LA this year. I'm thinking of running and offering some of my standard Strategicon games, both SotC/FATE and Buffy/Tales of the Slayers games.

So since I know a lot of people have played in my Shattered Earth and Red Planet games, I think my new Spirit of the American Hero will be the SotC game.

Spirit of the American Hero:
SWORD-ARM is the code name of America’s daring, highly trained special mission force. Its mission to defend human freedom against CHIMERA a ruthless terrorist organization determined to rule the world! Join the Top-Secret, covert, military operatives of SWORD-ARM in this high-octane game of modern military action. A GI Joe and modern Military & Adventure fiction inspired Spirit of the Century game.

Now as for my Buffy games I'm willing to take requests, Here's what I've got in the offering.

Tales of the Slayers Games:
When in Rome (Roman Empire)
Mystic Voyage of the Slayer (Arabian Nights)
The Chooser of the Slain (Viking Myth)
The Slayer of Sherwood (Robin Hood)
Bright Blades & Black Magick (Musketeers)
Dead Man’s Bones (Caribbean Pirates)
The Terror of Kali (Colonial India)
Bright Light City (Sixties Las Vegas)
Beach Blanket Bloodbath (Surf Movies)
Scream Slayer Scream (Exploitation Movies)
Bloody Night in Coahuila (Mexploitation Movies)
